Migrations contemporaines
Le recrutement international d'infirmières en Suisse romande de 1970 à nos jours
Abstract:
Switzerland has never been self-sufficient with regard to its nursing workforce. In order
to fulfil vacant posts, Swiss health institutions have always appealed to foreign workers,
mainly from neighbouring countries. After a review of the immigration of nurses working
in the inpatient sector in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, we will describe
the recruitment practices of employers and analyse in which ways these relate to
specific countries. By considering these practices together with the legal context within
which they operate, the case of the recruitment of foreign nurses allows us to discuss the
relationship between national migration policy and international migrations.
